From the Headmaster

Dear Families,

Welcome back and I trust everyone had a restful winter break. As we look forward to the final months of the school year, I want to bring you up to date on our new Mountain Campus program.

We have just passed the first admissions deadline and received applications from a strong pool of students for our Pioneering semester. We continue to accept applications for the spring semester, 2013 – the second deadline is March 15.

To date, every single Burr and Burton student has had the opportunity to hear directly from our Mountain Campus team about the incredible opportunity this program affords, and 60 plus students have followed up with visits in the last couple of weeks. An overwhelming majority of students like what they see and hear.

There are, however, a few items that seem to be on students’ and parents’ minds. So, in case you are someone who is considering applying, I’d like to share some thoughts.

1.Why do students have to give up after-school activities on the main campus—sports, drama, etc.—in order to participate in the Mountain Campus?
The answer is simple, yet crucially important: this program needs commitment from each and every participant. The Mountain Campus experience will be intense, rigorous, and will require tremendous teamwork. If we were to allow students to leave early for away games, play rehearsals, etc., this would erode the sense of commitment to the Mountain Campus community, which we believe will be one of the many transformational aspects of this program. Not everyone is ready to give up a sport or activity that they love, but we want every Mountain Campus participant to know that their commitment is shared by all.

2. What about college applications? How will admissions offices view this experience?
Colleges are looking for students who offer something unique. The more competitive the college is, the more they will look closely on out-of-the-mainstream experiences that set students apart. The Mountain Campus is a tremendous opportunity for students to distinguish themselves, to demonstrate an adventurous spirit, to show a willingness to explore the road less traveled. At the end of the semester, each student will receive something more powerful than a grade and comment: they will receive a comprehensive narrative written by the Mountain Campus team that has seen the student in a variety of intellectual, academic, physical and community endeavors. This narrative assessment will be part of each student’s transcript and will provide colleges with a vivid, in-depth perspective. Unique experiences like the Mountain Campus program have been shown to be entirely positive when it comes to college admissions.

3. What about GPA and Class Rank?
Because of the commitment required in the Mountain Campus program, the end-of-term assessment will be holistic and narrative. Assigning a simple letter grade would not capture the Mountain Campus’s range of challenges and experiences. Thus, along with the narrative report, the actual grade transferred onto the transcript will be a simple P, much like what we transfer for other study-abroad programs. Thus, the impact on GPA is neutral, though the impact on weighted GPA could actually be positive since many students take AP courses, and the impact of those AP’s would be proportionately greater.

Mainly, my recommendation is that IF this program is of interest, that interest should be pursued for practical reasons as well as the simple, basic lesson of learning to pursue one’s dreams and explore the world.

I know we sound like a broken record when it comes to asking for your support of Burr and Burton, but here’s something to think about.  We are currently at about 19 percent parent participation which means about 81 percent of parents have not supported Burr and Burton. Over 90 percent of our faculty and staff have made a commitment to the annual fund this year and think of the contribution of time and energy they already provide your student.

It’s not about the size of the gift.  Any amount is appreciated – whatever works for your family budget. It all boils down to being an active participant in this amazing educational journey of your child and showing your support of the programs and “extras” the annual fund provides each and every year to the Burr and Burton experience.

From the Athletic Department

The Mandatory Spring Sports Parent/Athlete meetings will be held on Thursday, March 8, at 6 pm. All spring sports will meet in the gymnasium. From this meeting teams will be dismissed to individual meeting locations.

March 12 Baseball pitchers and catchers begin practice.

March 19 All spring sports begin.

All students participating in a spring sport must have had a physical exam after June 2010.

Physical forms and permission forms can be downloaded from the schools web site, burrburton.org. Completed forms should be brought to the meeting.

Vacations
An athlete who chooses to go on vacation during a school-scheduled vacation period (holiday, winter, or spring) will be ineligible to play in the first scheduled game following vacation. Return to game eligibility will be at the individual coach’s discretion. When a trip coincides with the final week of regular season or post-season play, the athlete will need to choose between the sport and the trip.

Our Weekly Announcements are sent out every Monday morning at 11 am and include the week’s lunch menu and timely information on a variety of topics announced at the Monday morning assemblies. Go to Weekly Announcements and in the bar on the right follow the instructions to sign up for an e-mail notification or phone notification.

Our website calendar can also be set up to alert you about school events and all athletic games of just one particular team’s schedule. Go to Full Calendar, click on Alerts at the top, and follow the instructions. You can also sign up through iCal and an RRS feed on the right.

On the Athletics calendar page you can customize the calendars you are able to view by clicking on the Athletic Schedules box on the right to view all team calendars. You can choose to see and download all team calendars or just certain teams by clicking the box next to the name. When you have made your choices, click on the green Update View box to upload and view your chosen team schedules.

Fourth Annual Chili Challenge March 8
Join the boys’ and girls’ ice hockey teams on Thursday, March 8, from 5-7 pm for the Fourth Annual Chili Challenge before the spring sports meetings. Let the BBA faculty and staff, as well as the hockey players, entice you with their delectable recipes. Last year’s Challenge featured chilis from bear, deer and local gardens as well as “traditional” favorites. The community is invited to join us in an all-you-can eat chili eating and judging contest for only $5! Bring your own bowl and save a $1. All proceeds will go to support the boys’ and girls’ ice hockey teams.

Booster Club Hosts Harlem Superstars March 23
Burr and Burton’s Booster Club presents the Harlem Superstars!  Audience participation, door prizes and a halftime show make this a great evening of family entertainment. From the Visual Arts Department

The Southern Vermont Arts Center Art from the Schools exhibition opens March 24 and runs through April 11. Please join us for the free opening reception on Saturday, March 24, from 2 pm to 4 pm. The Young Picasso Pizza Party will be held on April 4 from 3 pm to 6 pm. All participating students and their families are welcome to enjoy the hospitality of Yester House at the Southern Vermont Arts Center.

This year’s Prism concert, Calling All Dawns, will take place March 14 and 15 at 6:30 pm in the Riley Center for the Arts. Students will perform an original song cycle by the composer Christopher Tin.

Several students recently spoke with the composer via Skype, and portions of the conversation will be folded into the evening’s performance.

Headmaster’s Cultural and Intellectual Enrichment Series

Poet James Richardson, a professor of English and Creative Writing at Princeton University, will be on campus Thursday, March 22, as part of the Headmaster’s Cultural and Intellectual Enrichment series. He will be visiting English classes during the day and in the evening he will give a reading in the Riley Center for the Arts at 7 pm. Performances by the Burr and Burton Poetry Out Loud contestants will also be part of the evening’s presentation. For more information please contact Peter Mull.

Future events in the series include a visit by Curt Ellis, the co-founder of Wicked Delicate Films and executive director of the Food Corps, who will be work-shopping with two of Bill Muench’s cinematography courses on film making as well as visiting Sarah McMillan’s Politics of the Environment class, Meg Kenny’s Economics class, and Dale Spring’s Environmental Science class.  Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea will be on campus April 24.

2012 School Club Roundup Statistics
The K1BBS contest team put in a stellar effort in this year’s Ham Radio Contest: 62 people were involved in varying capacities, ranging from set-up technicians to speakers, loggers, and helpers. We operated K1BBS for a total of 19 hours. Highlights include the most contacts (ever for us) by 134, a couple of contacts with Morocco, and one with an Indonesian station.  Overall statistics are below.

2012 Award Winners Are Here!

The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year’s publishing. “The 2012 Alex Awards will take readers from rural New Hampshire to the robot apocalypse to Katrina-ravaged Mississippi to a magical circus. The Alex Award winners are as diverse and eclectic as the teens who will read them,” said Karen Keys, chair of the 2012 Alex Awards Committee.

College and Career Information

Course Registration for 2012-2013
Juniors, sophomores and freshmen will soon be registering for next year’s classes. Please review the new Course of Study book (or reference it on our website under  Parents /School Publications) and take the time to discuss appropriate course choices with your son or daughter. Parents need to sign the course registration form for requests to be processed. Please call your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

Mock College Interviews
Juniors will have the chance to participate in individual practice college interviews with college admission officers the week of April 2. Details will be forthcoming.  Students will be accommodated on a first-come -first-served basis until spots are filled.

College Fair
Castleton State College will host a College Fair Tuesday, April 3, from 6-7:30 pm. Admission representatives from a variety of northeastern colleges will be available to speak with students and parents.

Notification of College Admission Decisions
Seniors: please be sure to notify your counselor whenever you receive notification from a college that you have applied to.

Financial Aid Alert
Seniors need to complete and submit their financial aid forms (www.fafsa.ed.gov and www.vsac.org) this month if they have not already done so. Contact VSAC at 1-800-642-3177 for assistance in filling out the forms. Don’t delay!

VSAC College Pathways Programs
VSAC is organizing a series of workshops on college admission. These free Saturday programs take place on March 17 at St. Michael’s College; March 24 at Castleton State College; and March 31 at Lyndon State College. Standardized Testing Registration
College-bound Burr and Burton juniors should sign up to take either the SAT or the ACT this spring. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings, but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

Junior Prep for Standardized Testing
High End Test Prep teacher Brian Marohnic (802-233-7711) will be conducting after-school classes  (12:30 – 3:00 pm ) March 23, April 6, 27 and May 4. Deadline for registration is March 9. Spring College Admissions Program
On Wednesday, May 9, from 7 -9 pm a panel presentation will be held on the college admissions process given by admissions officers from a variety of colleges and universities. This will be held in the Rowland Center. Sophomores, juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Summer Programs/Study Abroad
The School and College Counseling Office has collected information about a variety of summer programs, including  Vermont-based program CollegeQuest www.nevahec.org (for health-related careers); See website for details and deadlines.

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont that are week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, and Science and Technology. Applications will be online beginning February 1 (http://www.giv.org/apply-now)

Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2012-2013 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule.  Students must submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 12 for plans that begin at any point during the fall semester.

The Joe Cleres Scholarship
Elibility: Application may be made either by a physically or mentally challenged student or by someone on their behalf. Each financial award is to be used solely for tuition support. Essay required detailing how the student met the challenge of the disability and insofar as possible contributed to the community. One other page of supporting documentation required relative to the student’s accomplishments. Award: $1,500 Deadline March 8

VSAC UNIFIED SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE — March 9
Woodland Owner’s Association Scholarship — Deadline for filing financial information is March 9. Actual application can be submitted by May 15. Eligibility: Must live in Windham County, Senior or student already in school…Must be pursuing studies in Forestry, Wildlife Management, or a closely allied course of study. Must show verification of need by filing financial information with VSAC by March 9 via the Unified Scholarship Application process. Award $1,500; Deadline for Financial papers, March 9 (for application, May 15).

Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation Scholarships
Eligibility: 8 different scholarships/eight different criteria. A student may apply to ONLY one. Award: up to $8,000 over four years Deadline: March 15Application must be done online:www.pricechopper.com (click on the Community Events tab)

Berkshire Bank Foundation 2011 Scholarship Program
Eligibility: high school seniors with record of non-school sponsored volunteerism in the community and participation in extra-curricular school activities; GPA, 3.0 minimum; financial need; plan for 2 or 4 yr college or tech school. Eligibility: Applicants must apply and be accepted to a trade or technical school and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Applicants agree to participate in a personal interview. During this interview they should be able to discuss their high school academic experiences, career goals and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Rotary Club of Manchester – Award for Excellence

Saybrook Charitable Trust

Eligibility: senior planning to enroll in college who lives in Manchester, Dorset, Sunderland OR has Masonic affiliation through a parent or grandparent ; award based on leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities and financial need. Award: $500.00; Deadline: April 27

The Reverend Robert L. Clayton Scholarship
Eligibility: Graduating Senior, academic record, goals, school and community involvement, financial need. Award: $4,000 for four years; Deadline: April 27. Note: This is a lengthy application requiring three years of tax records. Don’t wait until the last minute complete this one!

Vermont Grocer’s Scholarship

Dorset Sportsman’s Club Scholarship
Eligibility: graduating seniors who live in Dorset and have been accepted into a school for post-secondary education including 2- and 4-year colleges, technical and vocational schools.
