From the Headmaster

Dear Families,

On Thursday night, February 27 I attended an open hearing with the Vermont House of Representatives education committee. The meeting took place in Rutland, and a number of BBA parents and teachers attended.

In the next few years, the legislature will be considering a variety of legislative actions that could affect each sending town’s ability to have parental choice when it comes to making decisions about where you send your sons and daughters. The purpose of Thursday’s meeting was to gather perspectives, and I would like to share with you what I shared with them.

I urged the legislators to think about the “system” of education in Vermont and to strive to create a national model from our unique system of public and independent schools. I shared the belief that there are a number of areas in which we have virtually universal agreement:

  1. We all want schools that are innovative and entrepreneurial, constantly seeking to find better ways to serve students and families.
  2. We all want schools staffed with passionate teachers and school leaders and filled with motivated students and families.
  3. We all want schools where the emphasis is on bringing out the best in each and every student, with accountability to those students and families, not a centralized bureaucracy.
  4. We all want schools that are affordable to taxpayers.

I propose to you as parents and to the legislature that these conditions are best created in a system where you as a parent have real power, and the only way to have real power is to have educational options. We have students who exercise this option by coming from as far away as Dover, Wilmington, Grafton, and other towns that require a tremendous time investment just to get here. We have international students who come from halfway around the world and pay over $40,000 in tuition.  Closer to BBA, while the vast majority attend BBA, there are a significant minority that exercise the option to go elsewhere. I learned last Thursday night that BRSU students attend roughly 35 different high schools, each one chosen by a family and student seeking to find the “right” school.

We feel tremendous responsibility to live up to your very high standards. The power that you hold, coupled with the competition that we face, makes us a better school.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, March 12, from 1 – 5 pm and Thursday, March 13, from 1 – 8 pm with a break from 5 – 5:45 for dinner. Students will be dismissed at 12:35 on both days and are welcome and encouraged to attend conferences. This is an important opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss student progress.  If your child cannot attend, please talk with him/her prior to your scheduled appointments to gain perspective on current courses — what do they like best? least? what progress are they making? where are they most successful? what challenges do they face?  During your conferences share your personal insights regarding your child. It is often this personal knowledge and perspective that teachers act on and leads to enhanced student learning.

International Women’s Day

On March 10th, under the leadership of seniors Maddy Pagnucco and Stevie Hunter, Burr and Burton Academy will celebrate International Women’s Day. Events include a morning assembly presentation, a talk/live interview with Bennington College President, Dr.  Mariko Silver and a community screening of the film Miss Representation.

An invitation was sent to faculty members inviting classes to the talk/interview with Mariko Silver (11:30 am on March 10th). All parents are invited to hear Dr. Mariko Silver speak about her experiences and challenges as a female in male dominated fields.

At 6:00 pm in the Scranton Room of the Rowland Center, the day’s events continue with a screening of  Miss Representation. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.

Parent Roundtable: “Parenting in the Screen Age” with Janell Burley Hofmann

On April 9th at 6:30, in the Riley Center for the Arts, Janell Burley Hofmann will engage parents in conversation on the challenges of parenting in the screen age. Janell is an author, speaker and parent coach. Janell is a champion for parent engagement in changing times and she is leading the movement on tech and respect. Janell is a regular blogger for the Huffington Post and a tech and family consultant for NPR’s Marketplace Tech. Janell is the mother of five children and her real life perspective allows her to relate and understand the needs and challenges of today’s families.

March! SATs start! Oh boy!
On Saturday the 8th. But also on the 8th is the Manchester Wing Challenge in the cafeteria from 4 -7  pm.
Parent Open House at the Mountain Campus at 6 pm on the 5th.
On the 11th  & 12th The Prism Concert will be held at 6:30 pm.
On the 12th  & 13th Parent-teacher conferences will be held.

And on Friday the 14th there is a teacher in service day-so
NO SCHOOL for the kids!

On the 18th there is the mandatory spring sports meeting for parents and children and sports start on the 24th.
On 19th The Second Parent Round Table  – “Keeping Your Student Safe – How to Address Drug/Alcohol Concerns With Your Teenager” – Something No Parent Should Miss.

On the 28th there is the Calliope Cafe at 6:30 pm.

From the Advancement Office

There is a lot going on as we head into spring in the Advancement Office so here goes:

1. Parent Phon-a-thon: March 4 and March 11

 We will be having a phon-a-thon to reach out to parents who have not yet supported the annual fund.  If you don’t want to be called, then now is the time to send in your gift!  We’re looking for volunteers so if you’d like to help with this, it only takes an hour or so of your time.  You will be calling your fellow parents asking for their support.  Is it a difficult thing to do?  Absolutely not – since you’re asking for support of a great school which provides an outstanding education to their student (and we’ll provide you with a script).

The dates for the phon-a-thon are:  March 4 and March 11 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.  To sign up please contact Christine Hoard at choard@burrburton.org, or call her at 802-549-8277.  We’ll be providing refreshments!!

2. Parent Thank You Party:  March 26, 2013, 5 pm to 7 pm at Seasons Restaurant

Invitations will be out shortly for this annual event and this is a simple way for Headmaster Mark Tashjian and all of us at Burr and Burton Academy to say THANK YOU for your support of the annual fund.  How do you get on the invitation list?  It’s simple – just make a gift before March 26, or bring your gift with you!  You can make a gift online or drop by and see us in the Advancement Office.  We’d love to have a full house so if you haven’t made a gift yet, please do. It’s a fun event and a chance to chat with other parents, catch up over some tasty hors d’oeuvres and a glass of wine, beer or non-alcoholic beverage.  Join us!

3. Parent participation update:

The latest numbers are in and we are working our way up slowly but surely.  You have until May 1 to make your gift.  The class with the highest parent participation will receive a $500 gift towards their class fund, and will enjoy a pizza party in May.  Overall parent participation¹ stands at 19.5% (5.3% behind where we were last year at this time).

4. Passport to the World, Gateway to Opportunity…..

Planning is ramping up for this annual event which includes an Online Auction during the month of April and culminating in the gala on Friday night, May 23 at Hildene.  You should have received a “save the date” card so we hope you have put it on your calendar.  The gala committee has been working diligently to pull all of the details together for this important fundraiser for the school!  We’d like to extend our thanks to all gala committee members for their help.

We’re still looking for some items for both the Online Auction and the Live Auction such as the following:

  •  A cord of wood
  •  Two airline tickets
  •  Window washing
  •  A spring cleaning (indoors or out)
  •  Any other services that you would be able to offer

Any gift-in-kind counts toward the annual fund/parent participation challenge and will get you on the invitation list for the Parent Thank-you Party so if you have an idea for an item, please contact Christine Hoard in the Advancement Office at 549-8277 or email her at choard@burrburton.org.

The mandatory spring sports parent/athlete meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 6 pm in the E.H. Henry Gymnasium.

All students participating in a spring sport must have had a physical exam after June 2012. Physical forms and permission forms can be downloaded from the schools web site, https://www.burrburton.org/Please bring all completed forms to the meeting on March 18.

The athletic department appointed former JV coach Jason Pergament as the head coach for the 2014 season.

Although the temperatures this week would suggest otherwise, spring is somewhere around the corner, ripe with new hopes and beginnings.  At the Mountain Campus, we are entering our admissions season, planting the seeds for a great crop of students next year.  Paul Kelly, one of our teachers and Admissions Director, along with a host of Mountain Campus alumni are busy meeting with each grade, talking about the program and answering questions.

There will be an opportunity for students to visit the Mountain Campus on Wednesday, March 5th, as well as an open house for parents that evening in Peru at 6:00 pm.  All students have been emailed the application and parent permission form along with details on these events and the admissions timeline.  If you have questions about the program, please feel free to call, email, or visit sometime.  We also have a host of alumni parents who would be happy to talk with you about their child’s experience.

Parent Roundtable: What Every Parent Should Know

On Wednesday, March 19, at 6:30-7:30 pm in the Hunter Seminar Room, Burr and Burton will be hosting the second in a series of roundtable discussions and information sessions for all parents of BBA students.

The topic of this forum is:
Keeping Your Student Safe – How to address Drug and Alcohol concerns with your teenager.

These parent discussions will be led by Burr and Burton staff as well as various professionals from our community.

The upcoming March 19 session will be led by:
Peter Zimmer, a licensed substance abuse counselor and has had a private practice in Enfield, CT for 30 years. Prior to that he was the Executive Director of New Directions, a community counseling center and a Prevention Coordinator for the Kingsport Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. His background includes training teachers and other mental health professionals to understand the nature of mental health and substance abuse. He has been involved in the local community for the last 7 years. He was the  clinic counselor at BBA for two years and has been a volunteer in the Collaborative’s Refuse to Use Program.

Lesley Brodie, M.D., is a board certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and board certified Adult Psychiatrist who has worked with children and adolescents since 1993. She trained at the University of Utah in a combined specialty residency in Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. She received her medical degree and a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Vermont. Prior to joining The Spicer Family Center she was Associate Medical Director and Director of Pediatrics and Behavioral Health for the Fourth Street Clinic in Salt Lake City, a community health center serving homeless individuals and families. She has held faculty appointments in the departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Utah. Dr. Brodie has specialty training in family based treatment of anorexia nervosa.

We hope that these meetings will be highly informative and have lasting impact on your student.

Course Registration for  2014-2015

Juniors, sophomores and freshmen have received the 2014-15 Course of Study  electronically on their iPad. Parents can review the book by clicking on this link: here. Please take time to discuss appropriate course choices with your son or daughter. The course sign ups will be done electronically and students will receive instructions regarding this process the week of March 3rd. If you have any questions please contact the School and College counseling office.

Mock College Interviews

Juniors will have the chance to participate in individual practice college interviews with college admission officers on April 9. Details will be forthcoming.  Students will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis until spots are filled.

College Fair

Castleton State College will host a College Fair on Wednesday, April 9, from 9-11am.  Admission representatives from a variety of northeastern colleges will be available to speak with students and parents.

Seniors: please be sure to notify your counselor whenever you receive notification from a college that you have applied to.

Financial Aid Alert

Seniors need to complete and submit their financial aid forms (www.fafsa.ed.gov and www.vsac.org) this month if they have not already done so. Contact VSAC at 1-800-642-3177 for assistance in filling out the forms. Don’t delay!

VSAC College Pathways Programs

VSAC is organizing a series of workshops on college admission. These free Saturday programs take place on March 15 at St. Michael’s College; March 29 at Castleton State College; and April 7 at Lyndon State College. Standardized Testing Registration

College-bound Burr and Burton Juniors should sign up to take either the SAT or the ACT this spring.  The SAT will be administered at BBA on March 8 and May 3. The ACT will be administered at BBA  on April 12. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings, but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

Spring College Admissions Program

On Thursday, May 8, from 6:30 – 9 pm a panel presentation will be held on the college admissions process given by admissions officers from a variety of colleges and universities. This will be held in the Riley Center. Sophomores, juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Summer Programs/Study Abroad

The School and College Counseling Office has collected information about a variety of summer programs, including Vermont-based program, CollegeQuest www.nevahec.org (for health-related careers, applications in our office); See website for details and deadlines.

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont that are week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, and Science and Technology. Applications are on line with a March 15 deadline (http://www.giv.org/apply-now).

Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2013-2014 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule.  Students must submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 12 for plans that begin at any point during the fall semester.

Manchester Wing Challenge

What are we asking for? Donation of 100 wings for a ‘Manchester Wing Challenge’

What we are raising money for? The Burr and Burton Student Success Program. This is a new program at Burr and Burton dedicated to reaching at-risk students, particularly first generation college-bound scholars. This program must raise additional funds to continue operating and growing.

What is our goal? To raise $1,500 to support a Student Success 24 Hours of Stratton Team.

What does Stratton have to do with this? The Stratton Foundation has partnered with the Student Success Program. On March 15-16 Stratton will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year – 24 Hours of Stratton. We will enter a team to support this partnership and need to fundraise for our participation.

Why is your donation is so valuable? The Stratton Foundation will continue to support our program as one of their primary charitable contributions. Last year, Stratton Foundation donated $75,000 to this program. Their support is vital to our continued success.

What is the ‘Wing Challenge’? It will be an evening event on Saturday, March 9. People who come to the event will pay a cover at the door and then get to sample the wings of the restaurants who sponsor this event. People will get to cast a vote for their favorite wings. The event will also feature live music, raffles, and will be staffed by teachers and scholars who are in the Student Success Program.

Why will this benefit your establishment? Your restaurant will get great exposure and promotion. The wing challenge will be promoted through all of BBA’s publicity resources and covered by the local press. This event will be promoted at Stratton and other local ski resorts and lodgings. The names of our sponsors and their logos will be a part of all signage and publicity materials.

What does the Success Program Do? It offers a network of support for Burr and Burton Students. Aimed at supporting low-income and first-generation scholars, it offers incoming students free access to Summer Success Camp – a three week summer program featuring team – building, college visits, orientation to high school, skill building, and goal setting. During the academic year the program offers students crucial academic support, courses designed to support their needs and further their goals, and opportunities to travel.

YALSA names 2014 Best Fiction for Young Adults
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announced its 2014 list of Best Fiction for Young Adults (BFYA). This year’s list of 98 books was drawn from 175 official nominations.

The books, recommended for ages 12-18, meet the criteria of both good quality literature and appealing reading for teens. The list comprises a wide range of genres and styles, including contemporary realistic fiction, fantasy, horror, science fiction and novels in verse. BBA’s K1BBS Two-Time Defending High School World Champion

radioThe ham radio contest team at K1BBS was on fire in the 2014 School Club Roundup.  During the week of February 10-14, 26 participants activated K1BBS for 24 hours … making 859 contacts (a K1BBS record) and scoring 237,084 points (another K1BBS record).  BBA’s contest team put in an amazing performance on a worldwide stage. The numbers: 859 countable contacts (plus 62 duplicates that can’t be counted) 45 countries, 44 states, 8 Canadian Provinces, 31 schools, and 12 clubs.  This year’s contest was not without its challenges.  No, we didn’t blow up the amp (2002) … or burn up an antenna tuner (2003), or have the antenna fall down (2010).  We did, though, have a snow day and a half.  But, that didn’t faze us as a handful of students braved the elements to keep K1BBS on the air.  This year’s captains: Teja Pammi (138 contacts) and Carolyn Tobia (86) lead the charge.  Next year’s captains: Quinnlyn Murphy, Zhongmin (Angela) Xie, and Cubby Arvin-DiBlasio have risen to the top.  So, how’d we do?  The scores come out later this year (it sometimes takes months).  Stay tuned.  Congratulations to the members of the 2014 K1BBS contest team.
