Dear Families:

Out with the old, in with the new. Yes, the spring semester, such as it is called, began two weeks ago, and while the weather is decidedly unspringlike, onward we march.

Next week, we will host Parents Open House (February 11, 6:00 PM).  As you contemplate whether or not to attend (“It seems awfully dark to go out…Plus it is so cold…”), I’d like to share some thoughts on its importance:

  1. Study after study shows that student performance in school is directly correlated with parental involvement.  By coming to the Parent Open House, you are demonstrating an interest in–and commitment to–a Burr and Burton education.  You send a message that you care about your child’s education. 
  2. If you know the teachers, the teachers know you.  We all communicate better with those whom we know, and strong communication is essential to any partnership.
  3. By attending Parents Open House, you are recognizing and appreciating the efforts of our teachers.  Teachers work very hard all year long, and there are too few opportunities simply to say “Thank you.”  This is one of them.

If you come to Parents Open House, you help make us a better school.

Dear BBA Families,

Please mark your calendar for Spring Semester Open House — scheduled for February 11. Registration opens at 5:45 pm in the Riley Center lobby and the session begins at 6 pm with opening remarks in the Riley Center and continues with individual classroom visits.

Open house is designed to give you a snapshot of your child’s academic life at Burr and Burton Academy. You will follow your child’s schedule and meet Burr and Burton teachers. You’ll learn about the engaging and vigorous learning experiences offered at Burr and Burton, the enduring understandings and essential questions students explore, and the essential skills and the habits of mind students develop. You’ll learn about homework expectations/policies and how students use the iPad as a learning tool.

The Burr and Burton Parent Association endeavors to foster partnership between families, school, and the community through communication, education, social and fundraising activities and advocacy.

We are into the second semester and hope your students have transitioned smoothly. We have the Open House coming up on February 11 at 6 pm and hope you all have a chance to come and meet the teachers your student(s) will be spending time with and see what their goals for the semester will be. Everyone at BBA works hard to make this an informative and insightful night for the parents and I encourage you to take advantage of it. BBA athletes are once again making us proud with their great performances so please check the athletic schedule and come out and cheer them on. We will be into the post season games before we know it. I am sure I don’t need to remind you that winter vacation is from February 16-20. Plans for the Gala in May are well underway. We could use a few more hands to volunteer if anyone wants to join us. It is a lot of fun and a great fund raiser for our school. The Parent Challenge is also underway and there is still time to be a “Top Dog” Parent. Any gift you can contribute is appreciated, no amount is too small. The Mountain Campus spring semester is off and running!  The community forming in Peru is wonderfully eager to learn, respectful, and already proud of their new community and campus.  With over 100 students who have already experienced the program, there is a real sense of strength in our history and opportunity for our future.  

Our alumni continue to do amazing things: get in to top notch colleges, bring Farm Fresh Connect to BBA, and earn an audience with Senator Sanders through a state-wide essay competition.  Just as importantly, every one of them continues to relate what they learned on the mountain to their lives at home and back on the main campus, working to become better learners and better citizens.  We have a wonderful school and incredible students!

As we move steadily into the “spring” term, we are already thinking about admissions for next year.  We have many students already asking about applications, but are also planning a few changes to make it easier for athletes to participate in the spring semester.  If you would like to learn more about the Mountain Campus semester, we encourage you to visit us during our Open House on March 3rd, or schedule a tour at some other time.  As with so many things, seeing is believing!

On behalf of the committee for this year’s gala event, Garden Party Gala, on May 22nd, we invite you to participate in Burr and Burton Academy’s fourth annual online auction. With your contribution, the auction is sure to build on the momentum of last year’s success. The auction is designed to generate excitement for the main event on the 22nd. Launching on April 1st and closing on April 30th, the auction will reach bidders all over the world (including parents of our international students, long-distance grandparents, and our alumni), plus the many friends of the school right here in our own backyard. The auction serves as a great way to involve those people who cannot attend the event for any number of reasons.

We are looking for services of all shapes and sizes to feature as stand-alone items and in specially designed packages. Perhaps you can offer a service, such as a landscaping consultation or wood delivery? In fact, a cord of seasoned and stacked wood donated by a BBA parent was one of our hottest items two years ago! Whatever the contribution, it will benefit our most precious commodity of all, our children!

Dear Parent:

Our school is participating in the Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) sponsored by the Vermont Department of Education and the Vermont Department of Health.  The survey gathers information about health risk behaviors of 9th through 12th grade students.  The survey includes questions about nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, physical exercise, injuries, and sexual behavior. Schools, communities and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding.

We are planning to administer the survey on Tuesday February 10th during advisory time.  The snow date with be Thursday February 12th.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with state and local school officials, developed the YRBS. It also has the support of many national organizations including the National PTA.  

The YRBS is anonymous, and survey procedures have been designed to protect your child’s privacy. The names of students who take the survey and their survey responses will not be disclosed to any school employee nor will any student’s name or survey responses be divulged in a report of the results. We would like all students to take part in the survey; however, the survey is voluntary. No student is required to take the survey.

Your child may opt out:

As a parent of a student eligible to participate in the YRBS, federal law affords you the right to inspect the survey before it is administered and to opt your child out of participating in the survey.  

Should you decide to opt your child out of taking the survey please inform us in writing by returning the form available for downloading here or a letter to Sandra Birch in the Health Center by February 6th.

All Students

The Course of Study for the 2015-2016 school year will be available before February break. The process for course selection for next year will be reviewed with students in late February.  Please take some time during vacation to review the Course of Study and beginning thinking about classes you would like to take next year.

Mid-Year Grades for Seniors

Many colleges request the mid-year or first semester grades of their applicants.  We have sent updated transcript to all colleges listed on students’ transcript request forms.  Because we use a universal mid-year report form, there is no need to provide us with college-specific forms.

College Application Update

Congratulations to the many seniors who have already been admitted to college!  Most seniors have applied and are now waiting for responses from colleges that don’t report decisions as quickly. Seniors should update their counselor on their college decisions.  We continue to work with the seniors who are still in the process of applying and aim to have them get their applications in by the end of the month.


Meetings with Juniors: 
Individual meetings with juniors are beginning this month as we help them shape their futures in college, gap programs, employment, military service, and other options. All students will have a scheduled appointment with their counselor sometime in the next few months when they will complete a resume of activities and explore opportunities.

For students who don’t have college in their sights at this time, we will discuss ways for students to determine possible career and job interests. Field Study, elective courses and part-time jobs are good avenues for students to prepare for employment after high school.

We assist college-bound students with the college search process, discuss academic preparation, review PSAT scores and plan for standardized testing.  We look forward to continued contact with juniors throughout the next year as we work together to find good college matches.

Parents often wonder how they can help. We meet with students and help them compile an appropriate college list, but families need to take the next step.  Please facilitate some college visits during the spring semester.  In our experience, we have found that students who have visited a few campuses prior to applying find the process more meaningful and manageable.  With advanced notice to teachers and the Dean of Students, college visits are excused absences from school. Plan a trip to see a campus or two and take advantage of information sessions and tours. Then be sure to let us know your family’s impressions.

Another way that we coordinate efforts with students and families is through the Naviance Program: This online program contains multiple career and college resources and also serves as a communication tool.  We demonstrated various program functions during our evening College Program for Junior Parents in October.  If you’d like access to this program or need to reset your password, please email Lynne Welsh, Office Assistant at

Standardized Testing Registration: 
College bound juniors should sign up to take either the SAT and/or the ACT this spring. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

Information on the SAT and ACT, registration forms and free practice booklets are available in the School and College Counseling Office and at and, respectively. Career and Development Center

A representative from the Southwest Vermont Career Development Center will be visiting BBA on Thursday, February 5 to talk to sophomores and juniors about a wide variety of technical courses available at the CDC.

Gap Year Fair

South Burlington High School is hosting a Gap Year Fair will take place on Wednesday, February 4 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. The fair will highlight programs that offer students the chance to volunteer, study abroad, intern, travel internationally and more.

Financial Aid

All Vermont students applying for need-based financial aid must submit the FAFSA and VSAC forms.  Pay close attention to individual college financial aid deadlines; many colleges require students to file the FAFSA in February and March. In addition, some private colleges require students to file the CSS Profile form. You will need to check your individual college financial aid requirements.  Information about the CSS Profile can be found in the financial aid section at

VSAC counselors and college aid professionals will be available at four Community College of Vermont (CCV) locations across the state to help you file your online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and Vermont grant application. Summer Programs/Study Abroad  
The School and College Counseling Office has collected information about a variety of summer programs, including two Vermont-based programs:  MedQuest and CollegeQuest (for health-related careers); See websites for details and deadlines.

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Mathematics, and Science and Technology. Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2015-2016 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule.  Students need to submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 15 for plans that commence at any point during the fall semester.

BBA Parent Forum: March 11 at 6:30 pm in the Riley Center – This presentation called “Having the Digital Discussion” is a guide for parents on how to speak about various topics so kids will listen. The presentation usually runs between 45-60 minutes and covers adolescent technology use, how to incorporate technology into the curriculum, issues students may have, amongst others. 


Save the Date

Mandatory Driver’s Ed  Meeting: March 16 in the cafeteria from 5:30-7 pm – The meeting must be attended by the student and at least one parent or legal guardian. BBA’s offers a free driver’s education program starting on Monday, June 22 and running until the end of July. For the first 3 weeks, classes run from 8 am until 10 am Monday through Friday. Under Vermont law a student is required to have 30 hours of classroom instruction therefore if a student misses any classroom time they will be dropped from the class, no exceptions. In addition to classroom instruction a student must have 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of in-car observation. For the first 3 weeks of class driving times will run from 10 am until 2:15 pm, for the remainder of the class driving times run from 8 am until 2:15 pm. Signups for in-car instruction are on a rotating basis. Your student must be 15 years of age, have their driver’s permit and have driven at least 8 hours before they will be accepted into the course.
