Cruz? Rubio? Clinton? Trump? Sanders?

Chances are, one of those names incites a visceral reaction in you. For that matter, they all might!

On February 1, the nomination process officially begins with the Iowa caucuses, and it will continue apace with a blizzard of media coverage, insults hurled, names called, and motives questioned right up until our next president is elected in November. I think it is fair to say that this election is different from any others in my 50-something years on this planet, and our electoral process has evolved (or devolved, as the case may be) in a way that focuses on personalities rather than positions, shouting rather than listening, insulting rather than respecting.

However, my intent is not to lament this state of affairs, but to raise the expectation that we as a community, and BBA as an educational institution, can engage in respectful dialogue throughout the presidential race. My hope is that we seek to understand each other’s positions, arguing from a place of knowledge, with a focus on facts and policies, learning and growing. If we learn to disagree agreeably and productively, united in our love for this great country, we will have done our students a great service.  This was the subject of an assembly talk I gave last week, and I share it with you for your consideration.

Dear BBA Families,

Please mark your calendar for the Spring Semester Open House — scheduled for February 10, 2016. Registration opens at 5:45 pm  in the Riley Center lobby and the session begins at 6 pm with opening remarks in Riley Center and continues with individual classroom visits.

Open house is designed to give you a snapshot of your child’s academic life at Burr and Burton Academy. You will follow your child’s schedule and meet Burr and Burton teachers. You’ll learn about the engaging and vigorous learning experiences offered at Burr and Burton, the enduring understandings and essential questions students explore, and the skills and the habits of mind students develop. You’ll learn about homework expectations/policies and how students use the iPad as a learning tool.  

I hope to see you all on February 10th!

Only a week into our “spring” semester and we are well on our way to building a fantastic learning community. The group forming in Peru is wonderfully eager to learn, respectful, and already proud of their new community and campus. With over 150 students who have already experienced the program, there is a real sense of strength in our history and opportunity for our future.

MC lights 1Our alumni continue to do amazing things: get in to top notch colleges, bring new ideas to BBA, and help lead the way towards a more vibrant and sustainable future. Just as importantly, every one of them continues to relate what they learned on the mountain to their lives at home and in their communities, working to become better learners and better citizens. We are lucky to have such a wonderful school and incredible students.

As we move steadily into the “spring” term, we are also in the midst of the admissions process for next year. We have hosted one student visit, have another in the works for this week, and have many students already turning in applications. If you would like to learn more about the Mountain Campus semester, we encourage you to talk with past parents, visit us during our Open House on March 2nd, or schedule a tour at some other time. As with so many things, seeing is believing!

Our days are now a little longer and so far, we’ve been having a fairly easy winter, which is good for everyone except our winter sports enthusiasts! But all through the dark and cold of January we’ve been very busy in Advancement. We have lots to share with you so please take a moment to read the following:

1. Update on Parent Fund Giving:

First of all, if you have made a gift this year, we thank you and encourage you to stop by the Advancement Office to pick up your “schwag”.

We’re off to a good start with the Parent Challenge and here are the figures – as of January 29, overall parent support stands at 20%, which puts us a little ahead of the same time last year which was 18.5%.

We still have work to do to get to the goal of all families participating, and Beth Eyre and Diana Pagnucco have done a great job encouraging all parents to support the Parent Fund, so if you haven’t yet done so, please make a gift. And following in the footstep’s of Vermont Public Radio, here’s a little incentive for you…..

3. On-line Auction

One more thing related to this year’s gala, Do You Believe in Magic? We invite you to participate in Burr and Burton Academy’s fifth annual online auction. With your contribution of an item or service, the auction is sure to build on the momentum of last year’s success. The auction is designed to generate excitement for the main event on May 27th. Launching on March 28 and closing on April 15, the auction will reach bidders all over the world (including parents of our international students, long-distance grandparents, and our alumni), plus the many friends of the school right here in our own backyard. The auction serves as a great way to involve those people who cannot attend the event for any number of reasons.

We are looking for services of all shapes and sizes to feature as stand-alone items and in specially designed packages. Perhaps you can offer a service, such as a landscaping consultation or wood delivery? In fact, a cord of seasoned and stacked wood donated by a BBA parent was one of our hottest items three years ago! Whatever the contribution, it will benefit our most precious commodity of all, our children!

We need to have your donation in the Advancement Office by March 1st. You are welcome to drop it off yourself or contact one of us and a committee member will come pick it up from you. Don’t forget, your item or service donation counts toward parent participation in the Annual Fund!

Mandatory Driver’s Education Meeting
Monday, March 14 in the cafeteria from 5:30-7:00 pm

The meeting must be attended by the student and at least one parent or legal guardian. BBA offers a free driver’s education program tentatively starting on Monday, June 20, 2016 and running until the end of July. For the first 3 weeks, classes run from 8 am until 10 am, Monday through Friday. Under Vermont law a student is required to have 30 hours of classroom instruction therefore if a student misses any classroom time they will be dropped from the class, no exceptions. In addition to classroom instruction a student must have 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of in-car observation. For the first 3 weeks of class driving times will run from 10 am until 2:15 pm, for the remainder of the class driving times run from 7 am until 2:15 pm. Signups for in-car instruction are on a rotating basis. Your student must be 15 years of age, have their driver’s permit and have driven at least 8 hours before they will be accepted into the course. 2016-17 Course Requests

The 2016-17 Course of Study (COS) PDF version is now available on the BBA website under the Academics header in the Departments and Courses section. Students will be requesting courses by grade level beginning with Juniors on February 8. The sophomores will begin on February 29, and the freshmen will start a week later on March 7.  Juniors should  immediately begin reviewing course options.  Sophomores and freshmen should take time during vacation to review the Course of Study and begin thinking about classes to take next year.

Each grade level will have one week to request courses through the OnCampus application on their iPads. As OnCampus course requesting is new for all of us, students will receive an explanation of the process before they begin. Additionally, advisors and counselors will be assisting students through the process.

Mid-Year Grades for Seniors

Many colleges request the mid-year or first semester grades of their applicants.  We have sent updated transcript to all colleges listed on students’ transcript request forms.  Because we use a universal mid-year report form, there is no need to provide us with college-specific forms.

College Application Update

Congratulations to the many seniors who have already been admitted to college!  Most seniors have applied and are now waiting for responses from colleges that don’t report decisions as quickly. Seniors should update their counselor on their college decisions.  We continue to work with the seniors who are still in the process of applying and aim to have them get their applications in by the end of the month.

Juniors

Meetings with Juniors: 
Individual meetings with juniors are beginning this month as we help them shape their futures in college, gap programs, employment, military service, and other options. All students will have a scheduled appointment with their counselor sometime in the next few months when they will complete a resume of activities and explore opportunities.

For students who don’t have college in their sights at this time, we will discuss ways for students to determine possible career and job interests. Field Study, elective courses and part-time jobs are good avenues for students to prepare for employment after high school.

We assist college-bound students with the college search process, discuss academic preparation, review PSAT scores and plan for standardized testing.  We look forward to continued contact with juniors throughout the next year as we work together to find good college matches.

Parents often wonder how they can help. We meet with students and help them compile an appropriate college list, but families need to take the next step.  Please facilitate some college visits during the spring semester.  In our experience, we have found that students who have visited a few campuses prior to applying find the process more meaningful and manageable.  With advanced notice to teachers and the Dean of Students, college visits are excused absences from school. Plan a trip to see a campus or two and take advantage of information sessions and tours. Then be sure to let us know your family’s impressions.

Another way that we coordinate efforts with students and families is through the Naviance Program: http://connection.naviance.com/burrburton.  (Students can access Naviance directly through their OnCampus Resource page.)  This online program contains multiple career and college resources and also serves as a communication tool.  We demonstrated various program functions during our evening College Program for Junior Parents in October. If you’d like access to this program or need to reset your password, please email Lynne Welsh, Office Assistant at lwelsh@burrburton.org.

We are eager to partner with parents in the college and career planning process. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

Standardized Testing Registration: 
College bound juniors should sign up to take either the SAT and/or the ACT this spring. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

Information on the SAT and ACT, registration forms and free practice booklets are available in the School and College Counseling Office and at www.collegeboard.org and www.actstudent.org, respectively. Below is a listing of spring testing options at BBA. Additional testing opportunities will come next fall.  Please contact us if you have questions.

Financial Aid

All Vermont students applying for need-based financial aid must submit the FAFSA and VSAC forms. Pay close attention to individual college financial aid deadlines; many colleges require students to file the FAFSA in February and March. In addition, some private colleges require students to file the CSS Profile form. You will need to check your individual college financial aid requirements. Information about the CSS Profile can be found in the financial aid section at www.collegeboard.org.

To file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and VSAC grant application, go to these websites: www.fafsa.ed.gov and www.vsac.org. Families are urged to file on-line as soon as possible and you are welcome to use our office computers if you need internet access. If you have questions about the FAFSA or other financial aid forms, don’t hesitate to contact the helpful folks at VSAC’s toll-free help line: 800-642-3177.

VSAC Financial Aid Forms Night

For families who have specific questions about how to complete portions of the financial aid form: On Wednesday, February 3, there will be a VSAC Financial Aid Forms Completion Night with our VSAC representative, Monda Kelley, from 5 – 7 pm in the BBA library. A worksheet that parents and students can use to register for the FSA ID (which has replaced the PIN) on the FAFSA is linked below.  To make the process smoother, parents and students should take a few minutes to create their FSA ID and MYVSAC account (students ONLY create MYvsac account) prior to attending the VSAC Forms Night.

Summer Programs/Study Abroad  

The School and College Counseling Office collects information about a variety of summer programs, including two Vermont-based programs:  MedQuest www.southernvermontahec.org and CollegeQuest www.nevahec.org (for health-related careers); See websites for details and deadlines.

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Mathematics, and Science and Technology, and Young Writers. Brochures are in the School and College Counseling Office. Applications will be available online beginning February 1 at http://www.giv.org. Application Deadline is April 1. Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2016-2017 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule.  Students need to submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 15 for plans that commence at any point during the fall semester.

VSAC Unified Scholarships:

Deadline is Friday, Feb 5 (Requests for official BBA documents must be made by February 3rd,) to be in the running for a $1,000 Early Bird scholarship from VSAC by completing and submitting the VSAC Unified Scholarship application. Come to School and College Counseling to obtain the scholarship book if you don’t already have one. Many scholarships to apply for, one application. (The regular deadline is March 4.) The Creative Arts Department will host a Calliope Café, an evening of music, Friday, February 26 at 6:30 pm at the Manchester Community Library. Admission is $3 students/$5 adults.

The Rutland Meals Challenge

The residence of Burr and Burton Academy’s Latz Dorm participated in The Rutland Meals Challenge.  The challenge has been led by the Good Shepherd Luthern Church since 2013, generating 35,000 meals for Rutland County food shelves and pantries.  This year the Latz students packaged over 2,000 meals in 40 minutes. The students worked as a team to create nutritional, easy to make meals for individuals and families in need.  – Stephanie Smith

FootballLet’s face it, at times, raising an adolescent can be complex,  to say the least. As parents, you often walk on egg shells. What do I say? When do I say it? One thing is certain, when your child is in need of guidance or when a crisis is unraveling (not the ones that have to do with fashion, crushes or chemistry), more than likely they will turn to the adult they trust the most. In most cases, that will be a parent.

The article here highlights a few key tips to keep in mind when your child reaches out to you when a friend is in need.

This is a reminder from the nurse that there are still some students who lack permission for treatment in the Health Clinic. Please log into the parent portal, verify that this section is completed and update any pertinent medical information. If we have this permission on file it allows for a more timely response should your child need services from the Health Clinic. The health summary section as well as the permission to treat are requirements for any student athletes as well. In order to ensure that your child is allowed to fully participate in the spring sport of their choice those requirements need to be completed prior to the start of the season.
