Dear Families:

At yesterday’s assembly, I shared thoughts regarding teenage decision making. I share these with you with the hope that they can generate further dialogue in your homes.

Assembly comments – February 29, 2016

Over the past few months I have had to deal with a variety of avoidable situations. Every single one of them involved decision-making by BBA students. Therefore, I would like to share some thoughts that I hope can help you in your decision-making processes.

How many of you have heard of The Marshmallow Test? This was a psychological test given to four-year-olds back in the 1960s. A little kid was put in a room, given a marshmallow, and told that if he could refrain from eating it for 15 minutes, he would get two marshmallows. Not surprisingly, many kids gobbled up the marshmallow long before 15 minutes had passed, but some didn’t. Some were able to show self-restraint and reap the reward.

The researchers tracked the kids as they went through high school and college and into life. What they found was sort of amazing: those who had been able to resist temptation for greater reward – in other words, those who did not eat the marshmallow right away – did better in school, had higher SATs, had higher college graduation rates, and found greater professional success. Those who were able to delay gratification at four years old were able to make better decisions and find greater success throughout life.

So what’s the lesson? In life, you get tested. You will have impulses – to drink, to steal, to cheat, to lie, to drive too fast. You will have the opportunity to make excruciatingly poor decisions, decisions that can have major, even catastrophic consequences.

One of the problems is that bad decisions can have a drastic impact on your life very, very quickly, whereas it takes time for the good decisions to bear fruit.  Another problem is that risk is often misperceived: it looks like fun until it is too late. It looks tasty. It looks like a marshmallow.

We need to keep practicing how to pause for a moment to keep from really, really bad decisions.

  • When you go to someone’s house for a party, and you are going because there are no adults there so everyone can really cut loose, you are setting yourself up for catastrophic decision-making. Practice going to the movies instead of the big unsupervised party.
  • When you get in your car, or anyone else’s, for that matter, and the driver is under the influence, you are setting yourself up. Practice getting home another way.
  • How many of you buckle your seatbelt every time you are in a car? Practice buckling up!
  • Keep alcohol and drugs out of this school. Practice sobriety, and respect this learning environment.

Life-changing decisions can happen in the blink of an eye: It is easier to cut down a tree than it is for a tree to grow.

I hope these thoughts are helpful in some way. Mainly, I want to see you all grow and flourish so you can enjoy the many, many joys in your future.

Four years go by very fast at BBA. In the short time that we have your sons and daughters in our care, we want them to become better decision-makers as well as better students, athletes, artists, and citizens.

Dear BBA Families,

Effective teacher-parent-student communication is fundamental to student success. Over the next two weeks, through interim progress reports and parent-teacher-student conferences students and parents will receive meaningful feedback and essential information to help students improve their learning.

Interim Progress Reports

By March 4 Interim Progress Reports will be released in BBA’s OnCampus parent and student portal.  Interim reports are designed to give a snapshot of each student’s academic performance. All students will receive a grade for each semester course and a comment if they currently have a C or below in the course. Please note that classes that run every other day (all year) do not report interim grades until the end of the third marking period, however, teachers have the option to report a grade and comment at this time.

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences

Parent-teacher-student conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, March 9th from 1-5 pm and Thursday, March 10th from 1-8 pm with a faculty dinner break from 5-5:45 pm. Students are welcome and encouraged to attend conferences. This is an important opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss progress. If your son or daughter cannot attend, please discuss the following with your child prior to your scheduled appointments — What do they like best? Least? What progress are they making? Where are they most successful? What challenges do they face? How are they using Flex Block? During your conferences, share your personal insights regarding your child. It is often this personal knowledge and perspective that teachers act on and leads to enhanced student learning.

We encourage all parents/students to schedule appointments by following the instructions/link in the resource section of the parent OnCampus portal.  

Please note that if you are a two household family, and another parent has already made appointments, you need to contact Sue Towslee at so that she can set up an additional account for your student.

BBA teachers welcome parent-initiated conversation at anytime.  If these days and times are not convenient for you, please email or call your child’s teachers directly to arrange an alternative time.  

As a reminder, school is not in session on Friday, March 11th due to a faculty in-service program.

Do You Believe in Magic?
Annual Parent Association fundraising gala May 27, 2016

Planning is ramping up for our annual fundraising event, the Do You Believe in Magic? gala, which includes an Online Auction starting March 28 and ending on April 15. The main event will be Friday night, May 27 at Taconic, the new luxury hotel in Manchester.  “Save the Date” cards went out in early February so we hope you have put this date on your calendar. The gala committee has been working diligently to pull together all of the details for this important fundraiser which supports the many student programs offered at our school. We like to thank our co-chairs, Robin Apps and Pauline de Laszlo for their leadership and extend our sincere thanks to all gala committee members for their help over the past few months. It’s going to be a great evening – one you won’t want to miss!

Parent Challenge Update

Our “Top Dog” parent list continues to grow as the year moves on. At the end of February we are roughly a little over 20% and while we still have a way to go to get to the goal, we are making good progress. Here’s a little reminder of our incentives to encourage you to support the Parent Challenge:

Mandatory Driver’s Education Meeting
Monday, March 14 in the cafeteria from 5:30 – 7 pm


The meeting must be attended by the student and at least one parent or legal guardian. BBA offers a free driver’s education program tentatively starting on Monday, June 20, 2016 and running until the end of July. For the first 3 weeks, classes run from 8 am until 10 am, Monday through Friday. Under Vermont law a student is required to have 30 hours of classroom instruction therefore if a student misses any classroom time they will be dropped from the class, no exceptions. In addition to classroom instruction a student must have 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of in-car observation. For the first 3 weeks of class driving times will run from 10 am until 2:15 pm, for the remainder of the class driving times run from 7 am until 2:15 pm. Signups for in-car instruction are on a rotating basis. Your student must be 15 years of age, have their driver’s permit and have driven at least 8 hours before they will be accepted into the course. Course Registration for 2016-2017
Juniors, sophomores and freshmen have received the 2016-17 Course of Study electronically on their iPad. Parents can review the book by clicking on this link: here. Please take time to discuss appropriate course choices with your son or daughter. Students will receive instructions about registering for next year’s courses through an online process. If you have any questions please contact the School and College Counseling Office.

Mock College Interviews
Juniors will have the chance to participate in individual practice college interviews with college admission officers in April. Details will be forthcoming. Students will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis until spots are filled.

College Fair
Lyndon State College will host a College Fair on Monday, April 4. Admission representatives from a variety of northeastern colleges will be available to speak with students and parents. We recommend that a parent accompany their student if possible.

Castleton State College will host a College Fair on Wednesday, April 6. Admission representatives from a variety of northeastern colleges will be available to speak with students and parents. JUNIORS WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND DURING THE SCHOOL DAY with a bus leaving promptly at 8:00 and returning by 12:00.  Please pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Welsh in the School and College Counseling Office. Notification of College Admission Decisions
Seniors: please be sure to notify your counselor whenever you receive an admission notification from a college. We don’t know unless you tell us!

Financial Aid Alert
Seniors need to complete and submit their financial aid forms ( and this month if they have not already done so. Contact VSAC at 1-800-642-3177 for assistance in filling out the forms. Don’t delay!

Free college planning events:
Attend VSAC free workshops to supplement what students are learning with their school counselors about  college planning. Recognizing that students are at different stages in their thinking, and that it often takes multiple messages to reach them, these workshops offer both the basic and more targeted information about the entire college planning process.

Standardized Testing Registration:
College bound juniors should sign up to take either the SAT (Deadline to sign up for the May 7th SAT is Friday, April 8th) and/or the ACT (Deadline to sign up for the April 9th ACT is Friday, March 4th) this spring. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

Spring College Admissions Program
On Thursday, May 5, from 7 – 9 pm, BBA will host a panel presentation and topical workshops by admission officers from a variety of colleges and universities. Sophomores, juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative program that will be held in the Rowland Center.

Summer Programs/Study Abroad
The School and College Counseling Office has collected information about a variety of summer programs including two Vermont-based programs for an experience in health-related careers: MedQuest (deadline to sign up is Friday, March 4, info at and CollegeQuest (info at

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Technology, Astronomy and Young Writers. Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2016-17 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule. Students must submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 15 for plans that begin at any point during the fall semester.

Monday, March 14 – Pitchers and Catchers begin for Softball and Baseball

Monday, March 21 – All Spring sports begin tryouts.  Lacrosse, Golf, Tennis, Softball, Baseball, Track and Field.

All Spring athletes must have had a well physical exam after June 14, 2014. Copies of new or existing physicals must be provided to the Nurse’s Office on or before March 11. Forms are available online to print and outside of the AD’s office.

Spotlight on the GALE database

The GALE collection is one of the many online resources available to Burr and Burton students. The collection of over 50 databases can be accessed any time from the homepage of the Lisa B. Tuttle Library catalog. A shortcut for the catalog can also be found in the resources page in OnCampus and on students’ ipads. When students are on Burr and Burton’s campus their login to the databases is automatic. From home, they will need a password, which the library staff can provide.

Some of the GALE databases include Environmental Studies, World History, Religion and Philosophy, Fine Arts and Music. Full-text newspapers, a online language course and a car repair library are also available. Some of the features of the GALE collection include translation, text-to-speech technology and citation tools. By utilizing the new Google login with their Burr and Burton email, students can save articles, notes, highlights and citations.

We encourage students to develop their research skills. Faculty members schedule time for classes to come to the library for research support and education but individual students are always welcome to approach library staff for research assistance.
