Dear BBA Community:

Last week, I received an email from a former student, Liam. Liam was one of the first students I met at BBA ten years ago when he was a ninth grader; he was part of a group that interviewed me when I was a candidate for this job. I was impressed with him then, and he had a terrific four years at BBA. He then went on to UVM, where he transitioned his gender and became Liam. Here is his email:

Hi Mr. Tashjian,

It has been a while since we have had a chance to catch up. I am currently in graduate school for social work. I will be graduating this summer. After I graduate I will continue to work as a youth therapist in Western, MA.

Maybe you’re wondering why I’m reaching out. Have you seen the news? President Trump signed an executive order removing protections for transgender students. People think that this is just about bathrooms or locker rooms, but it is so so much greater than that.

I wanted to know if you/BBAadministrators plan on making a statement regarding this executive order. It has been a while since I have lived in Manchester, but I know what it is like when I am in town. Students spend most of their days at BBA, and I believe it needs to remain a safe place for trans and gender non conforming students.

What are you prepared to do and say in order to stand with and protect this vulnerable population of incredibly bright individuals?

A public statement might seem benign, but I promise it will make a huge difference in the lives of the students who feel directly impacted by President Trump’s agenda. I would be happy to discuss this in more detail if you would like. I encourage you to show the students and the community that you stand with your students. I hope you are well and I look forward to hearing back.


I took his words to heart, knowing that his intention is to make us all stronger as a community. Here is my statement:

Statement on Respect for Individual Differences

One can’t read the newspapers or watch the news without seeing significant changes in this country’s approach to immigrants, immigration, and transgender people. While recognizing that ours is a diverse community in all kinds of ways, including political views, I want to remind everybody that one of our fundamental core values is a respect for individual differences. With this in mind, I want to assure you of the following:

  • We will continue providing gender neutral bathrooms for use by all students, regardless of gender identity, and we continue to support the notion that students should decide, based on their gender identity, which bathroom and locker room they are most comfortable using. BBA is unaffected by the changes in federal approach on this issue.
  • We will continue to be a school community that is inclusive of all religions, nationalities and ethnicities. Many of our students are visiting from other countries, and many more students and adults alike take pride in our immigrant roots and our religious beliefs. We will continue to ensure that there is no place in this community for discrimination, bullying, and bigotry.
  • We will always support thoughtful, respectful debate and discussion from all sides of political issues. As this great country experiences change, the debate for or against these changes should be grounded in fact, with good faith efforts on everyone’s part to listen to the minds of others as well as to speak one’s own mind in a thoughtful, respectful manner.

We always encourage dialogue, and we expect that dialogue to be grounded in thought and respect.

Sail into Summer, Charting the course for student success!
7th Annual Parent Association fundraising gala
May 26, 2017 at the Taconic

With spring right around the corner, planning is ramping up for our annual fundraising event, the Sail into Summer gala, which includes an Online Auction starting March 27 and ending on April 14, followed by the main event on Friday night, May 26 at Taconic. “Save the Date” cards went out in late January so we hope you have put this date on your calendar. The gala committee has been working diligently to pull together the details for this important fundraiser which supports the many student programs offered at our school. We like to thank our co-chairs, Robin Apps and Pauline de Laszlo for their leadership and extend our sincere thanks to all gala committee members for their help over the past few months. It’s going to be a great evening – one you won’t want to miss!

The importance of the Annual Fund

I have been in this position for eleven years and I know I sound like a broken record, constantly asking for your support for the Annual Fund. The reason I repeat my sales pitch month after month, year after year, is for one reason only – to provide the best educational experience possible for YOUR student.

What happens here every day “charts the course for your student’s success”. That results from our commitment to quality education and because we collectively care deeply about every student, our teaching staff, our administration, our facilities guys, our business office, our coaches and our Board of Trustees. We are putting your student at the forefront of everything we do – strategic planning, creative and innovative academic offerings, school and college counseling services, three seasons of athletic sports, arts and technology choices second to none, and so much more. Just as you do, we want the best for your student and that takes a lot of extra funding above and beyond what we receive in tuition from our sending towns. Mandatory Driver Education Meeting

Tuesday, March 21 in the cafeteria from 5:30 – 7 pm
The meeting must be attended by the student and at least one parent or legal guardian. BBA’s offers a free driver’s education program tentatively starting on Monday June 19, 2016 and running until the end of July. For the first 3 weeks, classes run from 8 am until 10 am Monday through Friday. Under Vermont law a student is required to have 30 hours of classroom instruction therefore if a student misses any classroom time they will be dropped from the class, no exceptions. In addition to classroom instruction a student must have 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours of in-car observation. For the first 3 weeks of class driving times will run from 10 am until 2:30 pm, for the remainder of the class driving times run from 7 am until 2:30 pm. Signups for in-car instruction are on a rotating basis. Your student must be 15 years of age, have their driver’s permit and have driven at least 8 hours before they will be accepted into the course. BBA participating in the “Art from the Schools” show at the Southern Vermont Arts Center

Burr and Burton visual arts students will showcase their work in the annual “Art from the Schools” exhibit of 20+ local schools. The exhibit kicks off with the “Young Picassos Pizza Party” on Saturday, March 4 from 12 pm – 2 pm. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

The Art from the Schools exhibition is meant to honor and encourage creativity in our youth, and to tip our hats to the amazing art education at Burr and Burton Academy and in Southern Vermont.

The schools participating in the exhibit are Arlington Memorial, Burr and Burton Academy, Currier Memorial, The Dorset School, The Downtown School, Fisher Elementary, Flood Brook, Grace Christian, Happy Days Playschool, Home Away from Home, Homeschools of Southern Vermont, LiHigh School, Long Trail School, Maple Street, MEMS, Mettawee Community, Middletown Springs, Mill River Union, Mountain School of Winhall, Northshire Day, Stratton Mountain School, Sunderland Elementary, and Vermont Academy.

The diverse nature of the artistic talent presented is a testimony to the level of outstanding guidance that the local art teachers provide to nurture creativity in their students. 


The Burr and Burton Academy Creative Arts Department will present a Prism Concert at the Riley Center for the Arts on Wednesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 16 at 6:30 pm. The Prism Concert format was first introduced at the Eastman School of Music where the presentation of musical performances occurred without the interruption of applause. In the earliest renditions of the Prism format, stages were built around the audience as if the music were reflected through a Prism. Under the direction of Neil and Julie Freebern, the Prism Concert has expanded upon this concept by tying performances together through themes or tributes to major composers. Through this immersive and unique multi-media show, featuring Burr and Burton Academy’s Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles, this year’s program, Visions, provides an opportunity to look at the relationship between technology and humanity. Congratulations to the following students for their acceptance to the Vermont All State Music Festival May 10-13 at Brattleboro High School:  Jazz Band-Kate Mori, Orchestra-Hannah Ruhl, Ramsay Eyre and Eric Vaughn, Chorus-Angela Caggiano, Blake Greene, Anna Freebern and Stephen Woods.  A special shout-out to Rebekah Hamblett for receiving an Honorable Mention in the Percussion Scholarship Performance category.  




2017-2018 Course Requests
The 2017-18 Course of Study (COS) PDF version is available on the BBA website under the Academics header in the Departments and Courses section. Current freshmen (2020), sophomores (2019), and juniors (2018) have reviewed course options for the coming school year and should have registered for their 2017-18 classes. Please contact Mr. Knutson or your student’s counselor if you have questions.

Spring College Admissions Program
On Wednesday, April 5, from 7 – 9 pm, BBA will host a panel presentation and topical workshops by admission officers from a variety of colleges and universities. Sophomores, juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend this informative program that will be held in the Rowland Center.

Mock College Interviews
Juniors will have the chance to participate in individual practice college interviews with college admission officers on Wednesday, April 5. Details will be forthcoming. Students will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis until spots are filled.

Notification of College Admission Decisions
Seniors: please be sure to notify your counselor whenever you receive an admission notification from a college. We don’t know unless you tell us!

Financial Aid Alert
Seniors need to complete and submit their financial aid forms ( and this month if they have not already done so. Contact VSAC at 1-800-642-3177 for assistance in filling out the forms. Don’t delay!

Grants and scholarships:
The deadline for VSAC-assisted scholarships for seniors heading to college next fall is March 3. Also, all students should consider applying for the Vermont grant. Info:

Free college planning events for Juniors and Sophomores:
Attend VSAC free workshops to supplement what students are learning with their school counselors about  college planning. Recognizing that students are at different stages in their thinking, and that it often takes multiple messages to reach them, these workshops offer both the basic and more targeted information about the entire college planning process.

Standardized Testing Registration:
College bound juniors should sign up for the SAT and/or the ACT this spring. See test dates and deadlines below. Please check your calendar for possible athletic and other conflicts. We offer both tests on our campus so students can benefit from testing in a familiar environment. We will be discussing testing with juniors during our individual meetings but please feel free to contact us for specific questions and testing recommendations.

SAT Prep Course at BBA: High End Test Prep with Brian Marohnic
The cost is underwritten by BBA so students are only charged $100.  A further fee reduction is available for students from low-income families.  Classes meet in the Hunter Seminar Room and are timed to prepare for the May 6 SAT. To register for the course, bring $100 (payable to BBA) to Mrs. Welsh.  Fee reductions are available to families with financial need – see your counselor. Registration deadline: March 15.

Summer Programs/Study Abroad
The School and College Counseling Office has collected information about a variety of summer programs including two Vermont-based programs for an experience in health-related careers: MedQuest (deadline to sign up is Friday, March 10, info at and CollegeQuest (info at There will be an information session about these programs in the Hunter Seminar Room during Flexblock (10:40) on Wednesday, March 1.

All students are eligible for the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont week-long sessions organized around the following topics: Arts, Asian Cultures, Current Events and Issues, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Technology, Astronomy and Young Writers. Students planning to spend a semester abroad or in an alternative educational setting in 2017-18 should meet with their counselor to plan an appropriate academic schedule. Students must submit a BBA Off-Campus Study application for approval. These forms are due by May 15 for plans that begin at any point during the fall semester; and the due date is September 15 for plans during the Spring semester.

Any student interested in the Mt. Campus for 2017/18 should request an application in the School and College Counseling office.  As we all know, March can be a long stretch so it’s important for our 9th graders to stay focused on the road ahead and continue to utilize all the resources available to them here at Burr and Burton.

VSAC Unified Scholarships:
Come to School and College Counseling to obtain the scholarship book if you don’t already have one. Many scholarships to apply for, one application. See your counselor or Mrs. Welsh if you have questions. Students MUST bring their document requests to Mrs. Welsh in School and College Counseling by the morning of March 3.

Manchester Lions Club Scholarship
Eligibility: graduating senior needing financial assistance with college, trade school, conservatory, AA degree program or other non-traditional training program. Also for a recent past graduate who may just now be moving ahead with their education. Award: $2,000; Deadline: April 3.

Alice Angney Scholarship For Leadership and Service
Eligibility: High School Senior VT resident, commitment to further education. Must have demonstrated initiative in overcoming a specific challenge or challenges, leadership and service to their community as well as academic achievement. Award: $2,000; Deadline: March 17.

Berkshire Bank Foundation Scholarship Program
Eligibility: high school seniors with record of non-school sponsored volunteerism in the community and participation in extra-curricular school activities; GPA, 3.0 minimum; financial need; plan for 2 or 4 yr college or tech school. Award: $1,500; Deadline: March 22.

Nelson E. & Marie Williams Scholarship

VT EPSCoR CWDD Scholarship

From the Athletics Department

Wednesday, March 8, 6 pm – Mandatory spring sports parent/athlete meeting
All spring sports will meet in the gymnasium. From this meeting teams will be directed to individual meeting locations.
All senior Spring athletes will meet on March 7 at 5:30 pm in the Riley Center for a leadership workshop with former NHL player Ashlin Halfnight. All other athletes are invited as well.

Pitchers and Catchers begin for baseball.

Monday March 20

  • All Spring sports begin tryouts.  Lacrosse, Golf, Tennis, Softball, Baseball, Track and Field.
  • All Spring athletes must have had a well physical exam after June 12, 2015. Copies of new or existing physicals must be provided to the Nurse’s Office on or before 3/17 (3/10 for pitchers and catchers). Forms are available online to print and outside of the AD’s office.
  • All of the other forms needed to participate in athletics must be filled out through OnCampus. Please complete forms on or before 3/17 (3/10 for pitchers and catchers). Assistance and computer access will be provided immediately following the Spring sports meeting in the basement of the Smith Center.

Student Athlete Bus Fund
We have a special opportunity to support student learning. One of our community members has offered to increase our transportation resources. The goal is to help students academically by keeping them in classrooms longer and getting them home earlier on game days.

When two teams (Varsity and JV) are scheduled to share a bus to the same location but play at different times this money would be used to pay the cost of sending a second bus later in the day so that the team playing in the later game would not have to miss as much school and the team playing the early game could get home sooner.

This money would also be used to send teams in a coach bus to playoff games that are further than 2.5 hours away.

FootballDear Parents:

Our school is taking part in the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. This survey is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health and Agency of Education. The survey gathers information about health risk behaviors of 6th through 12th grade students. The survey will ask about nutrition, physical activity, injuries, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use, and sexual behaviors. Schools, communities and state agencies will use the results of the survey to evaluate programs, plan new programs and to secure future funding.

We are planning to administer the survey on March 16.

The YRBS is anonymous, and survey procedures have been taken to ensure and protect your child’s privacy. It is important that all students, regardless of whether they have engaged in health-risk behaviors, are given an opportunity to participate in the survey. Students will not put their names on the survey. Individual survey responses will not be disclosed to any school employee not will any student’s name or survey responses be divulged in a report of the results. We would like all students to take part in the survey; however, the survey is voluntary. No student is required to take the survey. Students may skip questions they do not wish to answer. In addition, students may stop taking the survey at any point without penalty.

As a parent, federal law affords you the right to inspect the survey before it is administered and to opt your child out of participating if you choose. If this is the case it would need to be in writing before the date of the survey. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at 549.8250.
