From the Acting Head of School
In a little over three weeks we will welcome the class of 2021 to Burr and Burton Academy! Life on campus is busy – the facilities crew is working hard to finish up summer projects, many faculty and staff members are in and out collaborating and preparing for opening day. There are over 50 incoming Freshmen on campus for Success Camp. I’m looking forward to bumping into even more students as the campus comes back to life with fall athletics, performing arts meetings and school and college counseling programs. Please look closely at all the relevant dates in this Bullhorn post and watch for the official student summer mailing which will be released electronically by August 8th.
Mark Tashjian is officially on sabbatical and I’m excited to serve as acting head of school for the fall semester. We have a talented team of administrators, teachers and staff who are committed to the success of all BBA students. I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone back as we kick off the 2017-2018 school year. In the meantime, I hope that you and your family have had a great summer and that you find more time to relax and enjoy the beautiful August weather.

Forms, Forms, Forms
Why does it matter? Students will not have an iPad to pick up for the start of the year, will be unable to play sports, participate in performances or partake in extra curricular activities of any kind and will not be able to travel on any kind of field trip until all forms are completed.
There are 6 forms per student that need to be completed by a parent or guardian of 9-12th graders. There are two extra forms for parents of seniors. Two of the forms need to be completed by the student as well as a parent or guardian to be considered “complete.” The student and parent/guardian must login to their separate accounts in OnCampus to complete the forms. Parents/ Guardians and students of Mountain Campus Fall Semester will also see a form added in just for them. The forms will all be preceded by the date 2017-2018.

Can it be August already? While it doesn’t seem possible, it’s the reality and all of our energies here at BBA are focused on getting the 2017 – 2018 school year off to a great start. We like to welcome back our returning BBA families, and we extend a warm welcome to all new families. Whether you have a freshman entering high school, or you have a transfer student, please know we will do our very best to make your student’s experience at Burr and Burton Academy exceptional in every way.
One of our summer tasks in the Advancement Office is pulling together our Annual Appreciation report, which is how we recognize and thank our supporters from last year. It’s always amazing and heartwarming to see how many of you supported BBA in some way. We want to thank every parent who contributed to the success of last year – our Annual Fund drive was a phenomenal success! Whether you wrote a check, donated a service, made of gift-in-kind to the Online Auction or Live Auction for the gala, volunteered time in the concession stand, worked on the gala committee, attended the gala, sold ads for the Performing Arts program, sold raffle tickets of any kind, made cookies or brownies for a bake sale during the school year, helped coach a sports team, organized the Senior Sendoff party, or participated in some other way, we want to say a big, heartfelt THANK-YOU! We couldn’t do what we do without your help.
You will hear from the Advancement Office every month in the Bullhorn, and then some. We are responsible for all of the fundraising efforts of the school, which include the Annual Fund, capital improvements (such as our beautiful Judy McCormick Taylor ’57 turf field), and building our endowment securing the financial future of BBA. Please take a moment to read what we send you and consider supporting this great school in some way. We encourage all parents to give at a level that works for you, whether its $5, $50, $500 or more, your participation helps us demonstrate to foundations and other donors YOU are committed to quality education and support our efforts which in turn, motivates their support. And we have a dynamic Parent Association in place to start off the new year. Nan Bambara ’86 has taken on the leadership of this important organization. Her welcome follows. While the chairs of different committees meet monthly with the Headmaster or Assistant Head of School, all parents are members of the Parent Association and can attend these meetings anytime. On Monday, August 21, 2017 at 6 pm in the Riley Center, there will be an information meeting regarding the extracurricular offerings in dance, film and theater for the 2017-2018 season.
Mandatory College Admission Seminar for Seniors
Seniors planning to apply to college must attend a Senior College Admission Workshop for all college-bound students which is offered twice (attend just one): Thursday, August 17 or Tuesday, August 22, from 10 am to 12 pm, starting in the Hunter Seminar Room. We will be covering several important procedures related to the college application process. Please remind your student to attend and bring their laptop or iPad to the Senior College Admission Workshop.
Make sure course selections set for the entire year; it can be difficult to drop/add for second semester and we are required to report any changes of academic classes to college admission offices.
Transfer Orientation for New Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors (students only)
All new sophomores, juniors and seniors should report to the Smith Center Library on Monday, August 21, from 10 am – 12:30 pm. The students will meet with BBA Student Ambassadors who will answer questions and share tips about adjusting to Burr and Burton. We’ll also help students locate their classrooms and get connected to BBA technology. The program will end with a pizza party.
Junior Jump-Start Program
All juniors report for school one day early—on Wednesday, August 23, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Juniors have reached an important milestone and we’ll mark this special day with activities to kick off the second half of high school. The Junior Jump-Start program will cover career and college information, standardized testing options, the junior year planning calendar and more! Juniors will meet new students and have some time to reconnect with classmates and advisors. Students will all need a device. They should bring a laptop or be prepared to pick up their iPads first thing that morning. Please meet in the cafeteria to start the day.
Freshman Orientation – Students Only
All freshmen should meet in the Riley Center for the Arts on Wednesday, August 23, from 8 am – 1:20 pm. Students will meet their classmates, teachers, advisor and freshman mentor. They’ll find their classrooms, participate in a question and answer session, and have some fun, too. Dress casually to participate in activities.
Fall College and Financial Aid Programs for Junior and Senior Parents
Mark your calendar for Burr and Burton’s Fall College Night for Parents on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 pm. This program will take place in the Riley Center and will feature guest speaker Deb Johns, Associate Director of Admission at Yale. After her presentation, school counselors will provide grade-specific information for the college admission and financial aid process.
The Financial Aid Information Night will be on Wednesday, October 4, from 5 – 5:45 pm, in conjunction with Parent Conferences.

Standardized Testing Registration for Seniors
The registration deadline for the September 9 ACT with writing (at BBA) is August 4. Burr and Burton will also be a test center for the SAT on October 1 (the registration deadline is September 1). Please note that Burr and Burton does not collect the fees for the SAT or ACT; students must create accounts and register directly with these organizations at www.collegeboard.org and www.actstudent.org. Seniors are also responsible for sending their official scores to all colleges that require standardized testing. Please keep track of your usernames and passwords by making a journal entry in your Naviance account – you’ll need them again.
Test Prep for October SAT
The Tutorial Center has test test preparation classes for the October SAT. Call 802-362-0222 for cost and details. Group and private classes are available. First class takes place early August.
Seniors who haven’t yet visited colleges are strongly advised to make plans to do so as soon as possible. While scheduling college visits during vacations and on weekends is preferable, we understand that it is sometimes necessary for students to miss school. Campus visits are excused absences if parents notify the Attendance Office in advance. BBA School and College Counselors also make their own campus visits every year. Let’s trade campus tour reports!

Throughout the fall months, college admission representatives visit Burr and Burton. Juniors and seniors can keep track of the ever expanding list of visits on their Naviance accounts and make plans to attend meetings with teacher permission.

From the 9th Grade Corner
As the start of school year rapidly approaches, your son or daughter is probably having feelings of excitement, nervousness or most likely both. While the transition to high school is most often smooth, please know that advisors, counselors, teachers and support staff are here to help with the move from middle to high school. Look for a “start of school information packet” to be sent out electronically in early August. This packet should have all the the pertinent information needed for the start of the year. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

From the Athletics Department
I am very excited about the start of another school year and all of the opportunities in athletics and beyond that your athlete will have to pursue excellence. I look forward to seeing you at our Mandatory Fall Sports Parent and Athlete Information Night on August 16 at 6 pm in the gym. This year we have renowned sports nutritionist, Erin Sparrold, CN, MET, as our keynote speaker. Erin joins us from the Mind of the Athlete program. In addition to speaking, she will be available to our teams throughout the year as we look at maximizing our athletic performance through proper nutrition.
During my summer reading, I came across some articles I wanted to share. The first is directed towards the athletes as they try to find the things that will separate Burr and Burton from other athletic programs. It’s a list of behaviors that great athletes cultivate in themselves. The second is a letter to parents that recently retired Boys Lacrosse Coach, Peter Bidstrup, shared with the parents of his athletes. Coach Bidstrup was highly successful at The Governor’s Academy winning 250 of 325 games and 8 ISL Championships. He does a great job of describing how a focus on process creates winning organizations and he recommends some important ways that parents can contribute to that process. I hope you will take the time to look at both articles and share them with your athletes.
I wanted to be sure you are aware of two great opportunities for students.
The Bulldog Leadership Summit will hold its 2nd annual student-led retreat on Sunday, September 10. The goal of the Bulldog Leadership Summit is to create a community of student leaders who use their influence as leaders to transform the culture of Burr and Burton so that integrity, selflessness, and respect for everybody is embraced. We aim to inspire students to lead through character, accountability, and adding value to others. Last year’s retreat was a huge success with more than 40 students gathered to learn about and discuss leadership. We hope to see your student there next month.
The leadership retreat will take place on Sunday, September 10 from 10 am – 3 pm at BBA. Retreat topics include: Leading From the Heart, Bringing Positive Energy, Grit, Connecting with People, Multiplying Your Effectiveness and Increasing Accountability. The second great opportunity is the Peak Performance Program for athletes who aspire to compete at a high level. New sessions begin this Fall. Our mission is to provide tools for the highly motivated athlete to reach an elite level of performance. The program consists of 8 – Six Week Sessions (4 sessions per year). Last year we had 17 athletes involved – with 3 completing all four of the six week training sessions that were offered. The most controllable factor in our athletic performance is the quality of time that our athletes put into the Fitness Center. Last year we began a new policy that required all Freshmen, Juniors and new students to have an updated physical on file with the BBA Health Office. No athlete will be allowed to participate without one. Please plan ahead. There will be no separate Sports Physical. All the necessary forms needed to participate in athletics can be completed through your OnCampus account. These forms must be completed prior to the meetings on August 16 or August 13.
Returning Burr and Burton students must be in attendance at the first day of tryouts and all juniors must attend the varsity tryouts.

Each season as part of the co-curricular rules that you and your athlete sign, we provide some information on concussions. At BBA, we continually revise our concussion protocol to meet the best standard of care. Please see below if you would like some additional information.
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have teamed up to provide information and resources to help educate coaches, officials, parents and students on the importance of proper concussion recognition and management in high school sports. Mick Koester M.D., ATC, Chair of the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and Director of the Slocum Sports Concussion in Eugene, Oregon takes you through this course. In this course you will understand the impact sports-related concussion can have on your players, how to recognize a suspected concussion, the proper protocols to manage a suspected concussion, and steps to help your player return to play safely after experiencing a concussion.

Student Athlete Bus Fund
We have an incredible matching challenge still on the table to assist with funding transportation for student athletes. The primary purpose of this fund is to support student learning by keeping our BBA athletes in the classroom longer and/or getting them home from games earlier. Here’s how it works….when two teams (Varsity and JV) are scheduled to share a bus to the same location but play at different times, this fund would be used to pay the cost of sending a second bus later in the day so that the team playing in the later game would not have to miss as much school and the team playing the early game could get home sooner. These funds would also be used to send Varsity teams in a coach bus to playoff games that are further than 2.5 hours away.
In the Fall of 2016 a donor contacted Burr and Burton about setting up a transportation fund and laid down a challenge gift of up to $10,000 if we could match it. To date, we have raised $5,150. From The Dene Farm Program
The Dene Farm Program is in the midst of our second full growing season. This year our garden has expanded as we strive to improve the sustainability of our food system at Burr and Burton Academy. Our academic opportunities are also expanding at BBA. This year we have added Ethnobotany (the human uses of plants) to our course offerings including Sustainable Agriculture, Ecology, Naturalist Studies and Food Systems.
This summer we have a solid crew of five committed student and graduate employees. We have two rising seniors, Bryan Emery and Nick Williams. Our alumni hires are Emet Koffman, Ann Fisher, and Jennie Mull. They will be attending the University of Vermont, Mt. Holyoke College, and Warren Wilson College respectively in the fall of 17.
Most of our crew came to us through the Dene Farm Program courses. BBA’s farm crew is helping to keep our school and community connected to the land, promoting healthy relationships with food and fostering a mindset of environmental responsibility. We continue to sell our popular microgreens at the Manchester farmer’s market every Thursday from 3 – 6 pm. We are growing a wide variety of vegetables in our educational garden for the school year ahead. In our new production garden we have focused on 4 main crops proven to work well with our food system (beets, tomatoes, carrots and potatoes). All of our produce goes directly to the BBA cafeteria or to the Manchester community. The Dene Farm Program is growing strong in it’s second season. In the years ahead we plan to increase our course offerings, expand our gardens and increase the sustainability of our school and community. From the Health Center
It’s hard to believe the summer is winding down, and we are gearing up for yet another school year! Some of you might be feeling bitter sweet sadness as you send your child off for their last day of high school, others might be feeling some anxiety as your child enters the sometimes daunting, but no doubt fun years of high school. They will have higher academic expectations and experiences, and social pressures they might not have had in middle school, but yet, they will have new freedoms, and have new responsibilities and experiences. They are about to embark on the journey of their life!
For three weeks in June and July, fifteen BBA students accompanied chaperones Chris and Pia Nolan to Ecuador. After arriving in the capital, Quito, the group explored the northern highlands before descending into the Amazon basin for four days that included observing the flora and fauna of the rainforest, visiting a local family to learn how they subsist, and rafting on the Napo River. Returning to the highlands they traveled the Avenue of the Volcanoes and reached the end of the road at over 15,000 feet above sea level on the volcano Chimborazo. Arriving in the colonial city of Cuenca in the southern Andes, the students were met by their host brothers and sisters who spent time at BBA last October. For the final two weeks they visited their sister school, Santana, and did a variety of activities in and around Cuenca including visiting museums and markets, community service work, rock climbing, zip lining, and hiking.
The Ecuador Exchange is run on a bi-annual basis.
